Wheels on the court: Southeast school staff play wheelchair basketball
Abilities Week at Southeast intermediate and primary schools ended last month with school staff, the Pirates, playing two wheelchair basketball games against the Cavaliers from Adaptive Sports Ohio, a Wooster-based non-profit organization that helps disabled athletes take part in sports.
The Cavaliers won the first game; the Pirates won the second.
During Abilities Week, students took part in a variety of exercises and activities designed to provide them with an understanding and empathy for people with disabilities, with an emphasis placed on what they are capable of doing despite difficulties. The basketball games were an opportunity for students to see what people with disabilities can do.
Students asked the athletes for autographs afterward.
Each Cavalier shared his personal story with the students and Cavalier Brian Ververka offered some pointers on how to be a friend to someone with disabilities.
