Shopping for a baby is, in a word, overwhelming. Just seeing the sheer amount of baby and pregnancy products on the market (and how much it'll cost to get all this gear) is enough to send any parent down a shopping spiral. And once you become a parent, you realize what items you actually need and which ones are nice bonuses. (Or, in the worst of cases, items you wish you hadn’t wasted money on.)
You know there are some non-negotiables, like a car seat and stroller, but there are some other baby products that, while not crucial to your child’s survival, can make your life as a new parent a little easier. Things like a baby carrier that gives your arms a break when your whole body is tired, or even a TikTok-viral product that actually lives up to the hype. (Heads up: Both are on the list below!)
Sanity-saving products like these need to be celebrated and shared — and we're highlighting them in this year's What to Expect Mom Must-Have Awards.
One note before we dive into how the winners were selected: There is a category for best baby formula. We know that some areas of the country are being impacted by supply chain issues, meaning many families are struggling to find their go-to brands as a result. That said, we wanted to highlight some of the most-loved brands to help guide parents.
Each baby has their own preference; what one finds comforting, another may find irritating. You may have to go through some trial (and, unfortunately, error) to determine your personal must-haves. But seeing what has overwhelmingly worked for so many other parents may help you find that go-to gear a little sooner.
This is why we asked our What to Expect community to vote on their favorite products in 30 different categories. More than 4,800 votes were cast on everything from strollers and car seats to prenatal vitamins and sleep sacks. The products that received the most votes in each category nabbed a Mom Must-Have Award. In the case of two categories, Best Baby Skincare Brand and Best Baby Toy Brand, there was a tie. But, again, it never hurts to have options.
We're grateful for you — the parents and caregivers who took the time to vote in our survey and share your favorite maternity, baby and parenting items. You've helped us determine the very best products for those first months and years of parenting — and beyond. Now, other new parents can benefit from your experience.
Here, the winners of the 2024 Mom Must-Have Awards.

As your bump grows, your hips and back take on more pressure while you sleep, which can be uncomfortable and even painful. What to Expect moms swear by the Momcozy U-Shaped Pregnancy Pillow to help make pregnancy sleep a little easier.
Momcozy’s pillow, which was also a 2023 winner, has a U shape that hugs and gently supports your entire body, including your head, back, neck and feet. The pillow is so plush and the material so soft and cozy, that many moms say they continue to use it postpartum to provide support for nursing, sleeping or just sitting.
Good to know: There are a number of different color and fabric options, but if you tend to run hot, you’ll want to choose one that's made of cooling fabric.
"It supports everywhere and feels like a hug"
"Comfortable and supportive during my entire pregnancy"
"6 months postpartum and I still use it."
Packed with all the nutrients pregnant women need — like folate, vitamin D, iron and DHA — it’s no surprise that Nature Made’s Prenatal Multivitamin won this award for the fifth year in a row. But what our community members love most about these prenatal vitamins is how gentle they are on the stomach and taste buds. Many moms praised the softgel capsules for being easy to swallow, and free from both the chalky aftertaste of uncoated pills and the excess sugar of gummy vitamins. Nature Made is also USP-verified, a third-party certification that tests supplements for quality. As always, consult your doctor before adding any new supplement to your diet.
Good to know: The jars are available in a number of sizes, from 60, 90 or 150 softgels, with one softgel equaling a serving.
"Absolutely love this prenatal. I have tried a couple on my journey to get pregnant. This one has all of the nutrients and is easy to swallow and I don't get the fish burps."
"They have high amounts of a wider variety of vitamins and minerals compared to other vitamin brands I've looked at."
"Helped keep me feeling great my entire pregnancy and high levels of support within."
The reality is, no one wants to break the bank on maternity clothes. After all, you’ll only need them for a few months and may only wear them once. That’s why so many What to Expect moms love PinkBlush, which has everything from maternity underwear to special occasion dresses to jeans, and all at a reasonable price. The brand is also size inclusive, with an entire section of plus-size maternity clothes. If you have a fall or winter pregnancy, you’ll be happy to hear that PinkBlush’s clothing is great for layering. We’re partial to this cozy Chunky Knit Maternity Cardigan, which is also great to pack in your hospital bag.
Good to know: PinkBlush frequently hosts sales, giving you one extra reason to add more items to your cart.
"They are fairly affordable, really flattering, and great quality."
"Most flattering and stylish."
"I'm not usually big at shopping exclusively online, but PinkBlush had a great variety at an affordable price!"
Chicco’s KeyFit 35 infant car seat gives parents peace of mind. Not only does this infant car seat have excellent safety ratings and all the essential features you’d expect, such as LATCH connectors and two bubble level-indicators that are easy to read to verify that the seat is properly angled in the base. There’s also the ReclineSure feature, which allows you to adjust the car seat in one of six reclining positions to best fit within your vehicle without sacrificing safety. Crucially, it’s also easy to install — some parents say they’ve been able to do so in a matter of minutes.
Although it’s not the most lightweight option, the Chicco KeyFit is still lighter than some other models, and many parents say it’s easy enough to take in and out of the car and clip into the corresponding travel system. Suitable for children up to 35 pounds or 32 inches tall, the car seat can also hold a 4- to 11-pound-newborn with the use of the included removable insert. Another standout feature is the anti-rebound bar, which gives more stability and more legroom for your growing little one.
Good to know: If you want to pay less for your infant car seat, consider the KeyFit 30, which won the What to Expect Award last year. It has most of the same key features, but is suitable for children up to 30 pounds or 30 inches tall.
"It’s a great price point while still being cushy and safe for my newborn. I also like that I can use it for over a full year."
"Easy to install, easy to clean, easy to carry."
"Great quality, and versatile. Clicks right into the stroller system. Used it for two babies before it expired. Will buy another for this baby."
"This car seat is super easy to install and move between vehicles. We purchased the travel system that allows this car seat to click right into the stroller and also their jogging stroller model."
"Great ease of use and compatibility with the Bravo stroller. I also love the extra legroom for my long daughter!"
For the fourth year in a row, What to Expect parents have named Graco’s 4Ever DLX 4-in-1 the Best Convertible Car Seat, with some saying it’s the only car seat their child has ever used. That makes sense, given its longevity. As with all convertible car seats, the 4Ever DLX 4-in-1 adapts to your growing baby’s needs. But this particular car seat takes it the furthest, giving parents up to 10 years of use with its final stage: a backless belt positioning booster that’s suited for children between 40 and 120 pounds. Talk about stretching your dollar!
It’s also easy to install, thanks to the brand’s In Right Latch system, which allows you to quickly click it into place. However, some parents note that the harness can be difficult to tighten and the straps can be tricky to loosen, which isn’t ideal if you’re in a hurry. Parents also appreciate how durable and high-quality the materials are, with many saying it’s easy to clean and has held up well to toddler wear and tear.
Good to know: The car seat cover can be taken off — without uninstalling the seat — and thrown into the washing machine for easy cleaning.
"Love this seat. Easy to clean, strong, durable material. This is what we switched to for both kids after the infant seat. My five year old is in it as well as my two year old."
"We have 2 of these for our kids, from infant to toddler this is the only carseat I would buy again. Easy to remove fabric to clean, cup holders come out for easy cleaning. Extendable foot rest as little one gets longer. Roomy and comfy for littles. One hand adjustment headrest and straps!"
"Cost friendly, and very user friendly. Easy instructions on how to adjust and fit properly."
Although Uppababy offers several excellent options, the What to Expect community loves the Vista V2, deeming it the Best Stroller for the sixth consecutive year.
Wondering what makes this pricey stroller so appealing? To start, the Vista V2’s shock-absorbing wheels make for a smooth ride, while the rain shield, bug shield and UPF 50 canopy keep your little one safe from all the elements. There’s also the massive basket beneath the seat that can hold up to 30 pounds of baby gear. Meanwhile compatible accessories like the carry all parent organizer and changing backpack provide more space to store your essentials. The Vista also folds and stands on its own for easy storage.
But it’s the stroller’s longevity that really wins over parents. Though it’s undeniably expensive, the Vista V2 can be used from the newborn stage up to 50 pounds. As your family grows, you can add the RumbleSeat and PiggyBack ride along board (both sold separately) to push up to three kids at once.
Good to know: One of the most compelling reasons to invest in the Vista over other Uppababy strollers is if you think you’ll continue growing your family in the next few years. But if you don’t think you’ll need a convertible stroller, you can save money and get many of the same features by purchasing the Uppababy Cruz V2.
"Grows with the baby, spacious storage, and big enough for 99th percentile baby!"
"It is so easily converted as the child grows or if you have more kids."
"I love how smooth it is to push! Smooth for me and for my baby. I love the storage compartment and how much you can fit! Truly the best stroller."
"It has incredible storage. The ride is very smooth and it can convert to a dual seat stroller. Their customer service is also incredible"
"Very stable and easy to push. Love the travel system with car seat! Design is great and has a lot of good options for raising and lowering the seat. Best of all is the option to add a second seat for another child."
"Cult favourite for a reason! Drives like a dream and the size of the basket is unmatched!"
Let’s face it, toting your baby around can be a literal pain on your arm, back and hips. Fortunately, Ergobaby offers a supportive and comfortable line of carriers to make the task a little easier on your body. There are many varieties to choose from, including the wrap-style that’s ideal for newborns, but our community is partial to the Omni 360.
This best-selling carrier allows you to hold baby four ways: in front and facing you, in front and facing out, on your hip or on your back. The Omni 360 features a hidden baby hood for sun protection and a pillow to support their neck. But the Ergobaby carrier isn’t onlyconcerned with the baby's comfort. It also has a thick lumbar back pad and extra padded shoulder straps to help reduce any added strain.
What to Expect parents appreciate that this carrier is comfortable for both adults and babies, as well as how easy it is to adjust and switch between caregivers. Because it grows with your baby and offers excellent back support, many parents say they were able to use it far longer than they expected.
Good to know: The Omni 360 is machine washable and has a storage pouch to hold diapers and other essentials.
"Keeps baby’s hips in proper position no matter which way you use it, also breathable material and baby loves it!"
"I've had my LO in this since he was a couple weeks old. It helped us bond and let me do stuff around the house"
"Fits both me and my husband easily. Great support for both us and baby through all stages! My husband still uses it - my son is 15 months!"
"Easy on/off and very secure. Also breathable for baby. Easy to breastfeed in."
"Super comfortable for baby and the wearer, and doesn't cause back pain. Also easy to put on by yourself."
"Hands down, wore as an aunt and mom. One carrier lasted me seven years and four kids. Preferred the cotton over the 'breathable' synthetic material."
You’ll often find yourself fighting the urge to buy every bodysuit, sleeper and outfit set. But at Carter’s, you can give into the temptation every once in a while thanks to its low prices. In addition to the affordability, What to Expect parents rave about the retailer's adorable designs and vast size range, offering clothes from preemie to 14. (And unlike many other baby clothes brands, Carter’s also tends to run true to size). Though the clothes are affordable, Carter’s fabrics are also high-quality: Parents note that they tend to hold up well and don’t stretch out over time, even after many washes.
Also good: Parents like that Carter’s has several annual sales, including the semi-annual Baby Love Sale, allowing them to further stretch their dollar.
For an outfit that What to Expect moms love, try this on-trend Organic Cotton Waffle Knit Set, a fall-friendly outfit that’s less than $25.
Good to know: Not only does Carter's frequently have sales, but you can join the brand's loyalty program to earn points that convert into additional discounts off future purchases.
"Adorable options, comfy materials, fun styles and not super expensive."
"It's true to size, in the 15 years we've been using it, never experienced a quality issue and it's cost effective"
"The sizing isn't skewed and the prints are so cute! The fabric is also 100% cotton in the clothes I've bought so far"
"The best quality and lasts through multiple kids."
"Lots of sales and rewards, free shipping over $35, clothes that last, lots of seasonal and holiday options."
"I absolutely love the cute styles and quality at a great price. There are always sales going on to snatch my faves at a discount! It's also nice they have their own brick-and-mortar store as well as stands in big-box stores like Target."
For many parents, the Baby Björn Bouncer Balance Soft is the ultimate soother, thanks to its natural rocking motion. The ergonomic design gives baby just enough support, and it can adjust to three different positions. If you need to take it on the go, it also folds flat and at just 4.6 pounds, it’s incredibly lightweight. At $210, it’s definitely an investment, but many parents say it’s well worth the price, especially when you consider that you can turn the fabric seat around to use it as a children’s chair.
The bouncer can accommodate babies up to 20 pounds, but you should retire it when baby starts trying to sit up. As a children’s chair, it can work for little ones up to 29 pounds. Plus, the seat cover is removable and machine-washable, so it can take on spit-up and blowouts (the brand recommends using a warm water setting).
Good to know: Though bouncers, swings and rockers are excellent for soothing fussy babies, little ones should never sleep in these products, as the inclined seat puts your baby at risk for suffocation. If she falls asleep in the Baby Björn Bouncer Balance Soft (or any other inclined product), move your baby to a safe sleep environment (such as a crib, bassinet or playard) right away.
"Has lasted through 3 kids now! They have all loved it, always calms them down."
"Collapsible/foldable, Super easy to use, washable"
"I’m able to shower, brush my teeth, and cook while baby is content."
"It is a life saver during the newborn phase"
"My kiddo loves this thing! He loves kicking his legs to get this bouncer going!"
"This is the only bouncer my 8-week-old baby will go in without crying at least some of the time. (She is a velcro baby!) It is nice to have an option other than holding her while bouncing on a yoga ball."
"It is lightweight and is multi-use. I wouldn’t have another baby without this. It was our saving grace."
Breast pumps have become increasingly high tech in the past few years, and there are more wireless and hands-free options than ever. But when it comes to sheer power and efficiency, What to Expect moms agree that the Spectra S1 Plus is still the very best electric breast pump on the market.
Spectra offers four different electric breast pumps: the S1 Plus, S2 Plus, S3 Pro and 9 Plus. But our community is particularly fond of the hospital-grade S1 Plus. (So much so that this is the third year it’s won this award!) Although the pump is compact and lightweight, it packs the same power as larger models, with some moms saying it helps them express twice the amount of milk as other pumps.
In addition to being powerful, moms love that the Spectra 1 is comfortable and relatively quiet. It’s also wireless, which is especially helpful for pumping moms who have to travel and aren’t always near an outlet.
Good to know: The Spectra S1 features a nightlight and digital stopwatch, both of which can come in handy during late-night pumping sessions.
"The Spectra is worth every penny! Effective, durable, and easy to use. The night light is a really handy feature too."
"Best pump I’ve used (best output and most comfortable), fairly quiet, doesn’t need to be plugged in"
"The battery has amazing life (I’ve had to charge it twice in the last two months) and it gives me the ability to literally pump anywhere; car included!"
"Very easy to use and comfortable. Parts are easy to clean and wash!"
"Nightlight makes it easy for midnight pumps and quiet for everyone sleeping around you."
"Came highly recommended by others, so there's SO much support from other moms & lactation consultants because everyone's so familiar with it."
Wearable breast pumps are ultra-convenient, giving moms the opportunity to pump at work, while traveling or even doing things around the house. That said, most can run anywhere from $200 to $400 — until now. Momcozy has entered the chat with their S12 Pro, which moms are loving for its efficiency and affordability. For $140, many share that it works just as well as their standard pump, and they appreciate the double-sealed flanges, which work to softly suction to your breast and prevent leakage.
Moms who are oversuppliers also rave about the high-capacity collection cups, which can hold up to 6 ounces each, or 12 ounces total per session. To personalize your pumping experience, there are three expression modes that mimic baby’s sucking rhythm (stimulation, expression, and mixed) and nine intensity levels.
Good to know: The Momcozy S12 requires about 130 minutes of charging, and it’s designed for 240 minutes of use (about seven to eight pumping sessions). There are also six flange sizes available, but only the 24 mm is included with your purchase. So, if you need sizes 15, 17, 19, 21, or 27 mm, you’ll need to buy those separately.
"Easy for on the go. I have used it in the car on a road trip, at the zoo, out for dinner and so many other places"
"The price is unbeatable!"
In the flurry of new parenthood, some moms tend to forget about their own needs. To help when you first start breastfeeding or pumping, you’ll want a layer of protection for your sensitive nipples. Many moms credit Earth Mama Organic Nipple Butter for soothing and moisturizing sore, cracked and dry nipples. Another pro: It’s completely safe for baby, as it’s free from lanolin so you don't have to wipe it off before nursing. Rather, it’s made with a few simple ingredients, including cocoa seed butter, shea butter, olive oil, mango seed butter and beeswax.
Good to know: Moms swear by this nipple butter for their lips, cuticles and elbows, too.
"I use earth momma nipple butter along with silverettes and never had an issue with cracked nipples."
"Miracle item!"
"Nontoxic and effective"
Enfamil offers an extensive line of baby formulas, but Enfamil NeuroPro seems to be a go-to for many families. The formula provides brain-building nutrients like DHA and immune-supporting prebiotics, ensuring your baby is getting the fuel they need to hit their milestones. Available as a powder or ready-to-feed formula, Enfamil NeuroPro is structurally similar to breast milk, which may make it easier for your baby to digest.
Be sure to consult with your pediatrician before starting your child on formula, as they may recommend finding one that addresses common feeding issues, such as colic or milk protein allergy. Fortunately Enfamil has options for both. Many What to Expect parents say the brand’s GentleEase formula was incredibly helpful for their little ones with sensitive stomachs.
Good to know: Enfamil’s container is dishwasher safe, so you can buy formula refills instead of a new tub every time, saving you money.
"Easy on my son’s tummy, helps with reflux"
"Always agreed with my baby!"
"My baby was born premature. The doctors and nurse had gave us Enfamil EnfaCare to help him grow and gain weight since he weighed less than 5lbs in the hospital. Three months later, he’s still on Enfamil and weighs 12lbs!"
"They make a plant based formula that was great for my daughter."
Trusted by families for generations, Dr. Brown's bottles are known for making feeding and digesting easier. The line of Anti-Colic bottles feature a two-piece vent that keeps air from coming into contact with the milk. This prevents your baby from swallowing air, which can lead to spit-up, burping and gas. With the Options+ bottles, you can remove the vent as the baby's feeding progresses for a more age-appropriate bottle. (This can make them easier to clean, as the one complaint some parents have about Dr. Brown’s bottles is that they have many small parts.)
But the vent isn’t the only feature that makes Dr. Brown a favorite among community members. Many What to Expect parents note how their baby had little troubling transitioning from breast to Dr. Brown’s bottle and back. This is likely due to the bottle’s nipple, which is shaped like a breast to help reduce nipple confusion and provide a consistent flow of milk. Crucially, many parents also note that Dr. Brown’s bottles are secure and less likely to leak.
Good to know: Dr. Brown’s Anti-Colic Options+ are available as glass or plastic, and narrow- or wide-neck. The best one for you really comes down to personal preference. Wide bottles tend to be a little easier to clean, though narrow bottles, which are pictured here, are easier for babies to eventually hold on their own and also easier to fit in a cabinet.
"Saved me when I had my colicky baby"
"We originally had another brand and baby was struggling to drink from it. We switched to doctor browns and noticed an immediate difference. Feedings didn’t take as long and baby started gaining weight."
"No spillage and prevents colic and air when drinking through them"
"Only bottle my baby will latch onto. No leaks, very durable, helps with gas and colic."
"Recommended to me by lactation consultants for slow flow and natural shape."
"I love the anti-colic straw technology and all the accessories, like their sterilizer and sippy cup converters."
Although parents may have mixed opinions about pacifiers, the American Academy of Pediatrics actually suggests that parents consider giving infants 1 month and up a one-piece pacifier at nap time and bedtime, because they may help reduce SIDS risk. Among What to Expect community members, Philips Avent Soothie is the pacifier of choice.
Made from durable, hospital-grade silicone, the Philips Avent pacifier has an orthodontic-friendly nipple that ensures the natural development of baby’s teeth and gums. It’s also BPA- and latex-free, as well as dishwasher safe, so it’s easy to clean when it inevitably falls on the floor. The material is super soft and easy to hold onto, and many parents told us this was the only pacifier their little ones would take.
What some parents love most about the Soothie is that it’s designed to promote bonding. You can place your finger in the nipple, enabling you to help your baby suckle themselves to sleep.
Good to know: Soothies come in several colors and sizes. Select the 0-3 month size for your newborn (which we’ve linked to above), then upgrade to the bigger size around 3 months.
"All my babies have preferred this brand over others"
"It's one solid piece which was Dr recommended. It's the only one my baby will take."
"My daughter was given the Soothie while at the hospital, and immediately took to it! I ended up purchasing a pack for home to keep in all her fave places."
A five-time Mom Must-Have winner, Aveeno is a favorite among our community members, especially those whose babies have sensitive skin. For a little bit of everything, add the Aveeno Baby Welcome Little One Gift Basket to your registry. It’s complete with the brand’s Daily Moisture Wash & Shampoo, Calming Comfort Bath, Sensitive All Over Wipes and Daily Moisture Lotion.
The hypoallergenic baby wash and shampoo is made from oat kernel extract, which can soothe irritated skin and serve as a natural moisturizer. Meanwhile, the Calming Comfort Bath has relaxing notes of lavender and vanilla to help baby settle into the bedtime routine, and the fragrance-free lotion is extra gentle on baby’s skin. When you’re out and about, the alcohol- and fragrance-free wipes work to clean and moisturize.
If your baby suffers from eczema, several What to Expect parents praised the effectiveness of the brand’s Eczema Therapy line.
Good to know: Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Wash and Shampoo has a sweet but mild scent, which many parents love. But if you’d prefer to avoid fragrance, the brand also has an unscented formula that’s especially good for little ones with eczema.
"Smells good, good price point"
"The eczema therapy line helped clear my baby’s stubborn eczema."
"Gentle on the skin, eczema line actually works and their lavender line smells so relaxing for bath time!"
Just as many parents love Tubby Todd, with many saying it’s the only brand that doesn’t cause reactions on baby’s sensitive skin. In addition to basic bathing and skincare must-haves, Tubby Todd’s lineup also features products to treat cradle cap, diaper rash and more.
For a full Tubby Todd bath and skincare routine, this best-selling set comes with three hypoallergenic, pediatrician- and dermatologist-tested products: Hair + Body Wash, Everyday Lotion and All Over Ointment. Made with colloidal oatmeal, the ointment has gone viral for helping babies suffering from eczema, dryness and other skin sensitivities.
Good to know: The Hair + Body Wash and Everyday Lotion has a lavender and rosemary scent, but if you want an alternative option, they also sell the three-step, fragrance-free set.
"It's clean and their all over ointment works on all different types of baby skin issues"
"Super gentle, fun scents, and smaller business compared to others on the market."
You can never have too many diapers — or diaper options. With diapers, a lot comes down to fit, and what works for one baby might not be quite right for another. But What to Expect parents love Pampers for how consistently well-fitting and leak-proof they are.
Of the many options, Pampers Swaddler Diapers are a popular pick. The flexible bands on these diapers offer more stretch to accommodate your growing baby. The material is soft enough to be gentle on baby’s skin, but still strong enough to contain messes. In fact, Pampers claims its Swaddlers Diapers provide up to 12 hours of dryness protection. Additionally, the brand’s Dual Leak-Guard Barriers along the leg cuff further prevent leaks where they happen most. Many parents found these claims to be accurate, saying Pampers’ diapers are the best they’ve tried to prevent blowouts and leaks.
These diapers lack the patterns and designs of its competitors, but some parents like that, as the diaper doesn’t show through clothing.
Good to know: For extra protection while baby sleeps, you can also get Pampers Swaddlers Overnights, and when baby starts moving, Pampers Cruisers 360 are pull-on style diapers with a 360-degree stretchy waistband and the brand’s trusty blowout barrier.
"Specifically Pampers Swaddlers, they are great at holding in blowouts and are comfy for baby because they conform to different shaped bodies."
"It’s the best bang for your buck!"
"The only brand that didn’t leak for my daughter!"
"As a preemie in the hospital they put these on my baby and he’s one year old today and never had a rash."
"Great price, great fit. From newborn to easy ups, this has been our family brand for years. And the rewards program is great too!"
"My girl has very sensitive skin and we have never had an issue with this brand."
Founded by a parent whose baby dealt with a bad diaper rash, WaterWipes are the most gentle on the market. But don’t worry — they can still clean up the biggest blowouts. WaterWipes have a super simple formula, made up of 99.9 percent ultra-purified water and just a "drop" of fruit extract. While they’re slightly pricier than other options, parents say it’s well worth it for the results they’ve seen.
The classic WaterWipes are recommended by What to Expect parents, but the brand also offers WaterWipes Textured Clean (best for bigger messes, like for cleaning up baby’s face when she starts solids) and WaterWipes XL (when you need a little extra coverage).
Good to know: To purchase WaterWipes for less, you can score coupons when you Subscribe and Save with Amazon.
"Best when baby has diaper rash!"
"Gentle on the skin! No fragrance"
"Love water wipes because no alcohol or other chemicals that can be harmful for baby"
"Simple and effective"
"We never had any rash issues with these ones"
Year after year, What to Expect parents hail Boudreaux’s Butt Paste as their go-to for treating (and, in some cases, preventing) diaper rash. The secret: a thick, creamy formula comprising 40 percent zinc oxide.
Parents were surprised to see just how quickly the maximum strength formula went into effect, with one sharing it cleared up their baby’s skin in less than a day. Plus, many appreciated the non-greasy texture.
Good to know: Boudreaux’s Butt Paste is free of dyes, preservatives, parabens and talc. And while parents are partial to the maximum strength product (linked above), it’s one of several butt pastes available from the popular brand.
"This is the best for older babies/toddlers! My toddler didn’t care if she pooped and sometimes I’d get her up in the morning with poops in her diaper she would end up super sore and this was the only stuff that cleared it up SO fast."
"It stays where you put it on the baby and it's not greasy. Gentle enough for my baby who had eczema"
"Clears up baby’s rash in less than a day, easy to use, not messy."
"Thick and creamy. No strong smells and stays on baby's bum forever. Takes care of diaper rash quick!"
The BabbleRoo diaper bags are a favorite for their practicality and price point, with one parent begging the question, "Why go with another brand?" The under-$50 BabbleRoo Diaper Bag Backpack has it all: a built-in diaper organizer, insulated milk bottle pockets, a sleeve for wipes … and the list goes on.
In total, there are 18 pockets to keep parents stocked up and prepared for anything — but it’s also relatively compact, measuring 8 x 12 x 16.5 inches. This bag comes in classic neutrals like black and gray, but there are also fun patterns (your baby will love the dinosaurs or sea animals) and faux leather styles.
Good to know: The Original is their best-selling product, but if you need more space, the BabbleRoo XL Diaper Bag Backpack expands with up to 50 percent more capacity (up to 40 liters) than the OG.
"Fits a lot of stuff and easy to carry it all. Makes outings way easier!"
"Lots of room and insulated bottle pockets"
"Cute and practical!"
Stokke is a decades-old Norwegian company bringing chic Scandinavian designs into the parenting space. They’re best known for their ergonomical, high-end high chairs, made to give your little one a seat at the table — even as a newborn.
The most famous among the Stokke high chairs? The Tripp Trapp, a luxury wooden high chair with a five-point safety harness and adjustable seat and footplates, so it can grow with your baby from 6 months to 3 years and beyond. It can support up to 300 pounds, so you can even use it as a dining chair for adults.
While it’s more of a splurge than other high chairs, parents appreciate the sleek design, long-lasting quality and how you can fully detach the harness and throw it in the wash (FYI, you can simply wipe everything else clean).
Good to know: The Tripp Trapp tray is sold separately. You can also purchase a cushion for extra comfort or the newborn insert to keep your little one nearby when you need to be hands-free.
"The height matches our dinner table and it allows our baby to enjoy dinner together"
"Easy to clean! Grows with my baby. Seriously such a good investment and footprint is small compared to others."
"Grows with the baby! Can use it for years! The design and look is excellent."
"We LOVED the newborn attachment. We started using it our 2nd day home from the hospital and were able to use it until our baby was 5 months old. We spend a lot of time in the kitchen and it was the perfect way to have her join us. We now are using the highchair as a highchair. Our baby eats dinner with us at the table which this highchair is the perfect height for."
"High quality, long lasting (like adulthood long) and aesthetically pleasing."
Nursery furniture can be some of the priciest new-baby gear expecting parents have to invest in, so it’s helpful to find pieces that serve multiple roles. Most parents opt for one of Delta Children’s cribs, since most of them have several configurations that allow them to function as a crib, toddler bed, daybed and, eventually, a full-size bed. They’re also more affordable than most cribs on the market, and for extra reassurance, they’re all certified by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) and meet or exceed all standards outlined by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).
If we had to pick a favorite, it’s the best-selling Essex 4-in-1 Convertible Crib has an adjustable height mattress (sold separately) and converts to become a toddler bed, daybed and sofa. Just note that the daybed/sofa rail is included, but the toddler guardrails are sold separately.
Good to know: It’s Greenguard Gold-certified, meaning its materials have been screened for more than 10,000 potentially dangerous chemicals.
"Easy to put together, clear instructions and quality materials"
"Great neutral color, great that it’s convertible into a toddler bed and beyond"
"Easy to assemble even at 8 months pregnant"
Not only does the Infant Optics DXR-8 deliver all the must-have features you’d expect in a video monitor at this price point — two-way audio, a 720p HD camera, night vision — but at $200, it’s significantly less expensive than comparable models. The video quality is crystal clear, and many parents note how reliable it is since it doesn’t require Wi-Fi — a major bonus for parents concerned about losing connectivity or hacking. Many parents also appreciate that you can adjust the pan, tilt, zoom, volume and brightness.
Good to know: Only one camera and one monitor are included with your purchase, so you’ll need to buy additional cameras (up to four cameras will work with a singular monitor!) if you have kids in other rooms.
"No WiFi connection needed, great quality sound and picture"
"I've had mine for five years now almost six, and it's still going strong. I use it for my 2 year old's room. I'm going to get an add-on camera for my next baby and I can see both rooms."
"Super easy to use. Non-WiFi. Travel with it all the time on vacation. Simple and perfect"
"Extremely high quality and easy to use. Plus, it's on its own network, which makes me feel more secure."
"Battery operated so still works if the power goes out. Great video quality and two way talk capabilities."
When you think of playards, you probably think of Graco — and for good reason. The company offers a full range of playards from bare bones to souped-up models. For a happy medium, parents love the Portable Playard, telling us they appreciate the affordable price point and the fact that it offers long-term use.
This not-too-large playard keeps your little one contained while still providing plenty of room to wander. As with all Graco playards, it features the push-button fold for quick hassle-free packing. Folded up, it’s compact and easy to put in your car or store for later use.
If you’d like to get more use out of your playard before your baby enters the exploring stage, another popular option is the brand’s Travel Dome DLX Playard. This slightly more expensive version comes with a removable full-size bassinet for smaller, less mobile babies to rest while they are home or away. This makes it a great option for families who want baby to sleep in their bedroom (which the AAP recommends for the first 6 months to reduce SIDS risk) but would prefer not to invest in a separate bassinet or mini crib.
Good to know: Though very compact when folded up, some parents do find the Portable Playard a little trickier to set up than others on the market.
"Easy to set up/take down, affordable, easy to travel, simple"
"We take ours everywhere! Easy to set-up and take-down and easy to travel with."
"It's a tried and true popular baby item for a reason. So simple to assemble and extremely helpful in the newborn phase to have the Close2Baby Bassinet version of the playard, which comes with a newborn bassinet and diaper changing station attachment. I got 3 months of use out of that setup before converting to a crib for my baby. Will use it as a standard playard once she can sit on her own."
"The Graco PacknPlays that come with the changing table attachment are amazing. It was a game changer for us and allowed us to have a safe changing and sleeping station in our downstairs living room."
"We've traveled with it several times and it is very easy to pack up and then set up in a hotel room. The one I bought also included a bassinet, which we used in our bedroom until we moved our baby to her crib."
Your little escape artists will be no match for Love to Dream Swaddle UP, mostly because of its patented "arms up" design. It’s possible that your little one will love sleeping with her arms up, a common self-soothing strategy, and the wings on this sleep sack will automatically put her in this comforting position. The 93% cotton swaddle provides plenty of comfort and keeps baby’s startle reflexes in check, but with 7% elastane, your little one will be able to stretch and move around. Parents also praise the dual zipper design, which makes overnight diaper changes a breeze.
The Love to Dream Swaddle UP comes in three sizes — newborn (0-1 month, or 5-8.5 pounds), small (1-3 months, or 8-13 pounds) and medium (3-6 months, or 13-19 pounds).
Good to know: When baby starts rolling or using her hands to push up, among other developmental signs, you’ll want to swap out your swaddle for a sleep sack.
"This will be my 3rd baby that will use this swaddle, if he likes it. So far, it has been a favorite in my household. Babies like to rub their faces for comfort when they sleep, which is a big reason why I love this swaddle; it lets baby reach their little cheeks if they stretch!"
"Babies naturally like their hands up! This is great for self soothing too!"
"My baby hated her arms being swaddled and this was the only thing that worked."
"He loves to have his hands up by his face, but this keeps him warm and protects him from accidentally scratching himself in his sleep."
Once a baby has graduated from a swaddle, some parents transition them to a sleep sack to allow for normal movement while providing a little extra warmth. (The AAP says cribs should be free from loose objects, including blankets, until your child is at least 1 year old.) And many parents opt for the Halo SleepSack, a three-time What to Except Sleep Award-winner and four-time Mom Must-Have Award-winner.
Made of 100 percent cotton, the wearable blanket has a two-way zipper for easy diaper changes, which parents love. Another pro: the sleep sack can be used through the toddler years, with sizes suited for babies up to 24 months. The sleep sack’s spacious design provides plenty of room, which is important for proper hip development, while the lack of sleeves keeps baby from overheating. The Halo Sleepsack should be used over regular sleepwear for a comfy night’s rest.
Good to know: If you’re looking for a swaddle that can also transition to a sleep sack, opt for the brand’s SleepSack Swaddle. This style is very similar to Halo’s wearable blanket, but it has Velcro flaps that can be used to swaddle baby for the first few months. Once she shows signs of rolling over, usually around 3 or 4 months, you can wrap the flaps around her body and position her arms out.
"I love the Halo sleep sacks. I love the quality, the designs, and the double zipper which make for easy diaper changes."
"Sooo easy to use! Very comfortable and my babies preferred sleep arrangement."
"The Halo Sleepsack is versatile, having 3 different ways for your baby to sleep. My son loves to have his arms out while asleep, and is able to with the Halo."
"All my babies have loved them and they have many different size options and thickness options."
For the fourth year in a row, What to Expect parents have deemed Lovevery the Best Baby Toy Brand. With blocks, play gyms, crawl-through tunnels and more, Lovevery offers an array of aesthetically-pleasing, sustainably-made toys that support your child’s development. But the brand is best known for its Lovevery Play Kits, Montessori-inspired subscription service that delivers a box of toys and books for your baby’s particular developmental stage every two to three months.
In addition to the variety of toys, parents love that each kit comes with a play guide that provides information about your child’s stage and suggestions on how to play with the toys to help with their development.
Good to know: Play kits are available for newborns to 4-year-olds, but some of the toys (including the blocks, music set and some others) are sold separately if you’d prefer not to commit to a subscription.
"Love that they give me toys that are developmentally correct. Helps me feel like I’m helping my baby learn at a good pace and helps me not research everything!"
"Great for those interested in Montessori activities"
"Love the kits. Wonderful quality!"
"Developmentally appropriate and super engaging. They are always the toys my toddler wants to play with and seems most engaged by."
"LO loves looking at the items, keep her interest and have several options in the box to grow with her"
Melissa & Doug is another brand praised for their developmental toys for babies and kids, from the newborn stage to age 8. You can explore their products by age or style, but they’re best known for pretend play sets, colorful wooden learning toys, arts and crafts kits and more.
A must-have, according to What to Expect parents and babies alike? The K’s Kids Flip Fish Baby Toy. At first glance, it looks like a fun, multicolored and multi-textured stuffy. Upon further inspection, baby will find hidden pictures under the scales, work on her grasp and finger strength by operating the squeaker tail and see herself in the shatterproof mirror attached to one of the scales.
Good to know: If you’re not quite sure where to start, use Melissa & Doug’s "Shop by Age" feature to look for toys appropriate for children in these age groups: 0-12 months, 1-2 years, 2-3 years, 3-5 years and 6-8 years.
"Everything is just such good quality. Their toys are so well thought out and my daughter just loves them."
"My child smiles every time he sees one of his Melissa & Doug toys! They are visually appealing & just the right amount of tactile stimulation for him!"
"So many good choices! Melissa and Doug have fantastic variety and good quality products. You don't need super fancy toys for your kids. Early learning thrives with play-based interaction with you."
Scrolling through TikTok has introduced us to some handy hacks and parenting tools. Case in point, the viral SnotSucker, which has amassed millions of fans for its efficiency. True to its name, you insert the nasal aspirator into your congested baby’s nostril and literally suck out the boogers — but fortunately, it’s not as gross as it sounds. There’s a disposable filter in there to trap snot.
Good to know: Each set comes with four hygiene filters, and when you inevitably need more, you can purchase those separately.
"I was grossed out at first, but it really works! When your kid is sick, you'll do anything to get them some relief."
"Efficient and easy to clean. Helped him breathe and sleep better"
"Love using this over the bulb. Easy to clean and easy to use!"
"Game changer for sick babies"
